At a critical period of actively addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development globally, on September 8, 2026, SmartCool and Chery Automobile Global Technology Innovation Center held a technical exchange, and the two sides had in-depth discussions on the application of radiation cooling technology and film products in the automotive field. Chery Global Technology Innovation Center is located in Fengming Research and Innovation Center, Economic and Technological Development Zone, Wuhu City, Anhui Province. It is Chery Automobile's global research and development institution, always advocating the development concept of "openness, cooperation, innovation, and win-win".
1、 Based on the intersection of technology and green, SmartCool showcases its radiation cooling technology strength
SmartCool is based at the intersection of technology and green, pioneering the exploration of carbon neutrality paths that integrate new materials, radiative cooling, and artificial intelligence. As a new material research and engineering application enterprise in the field of radiation refrigeration technology, the company has formed a composite professional team spanning the fields of materials science, engineering technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development, consisting of professional operation and maintenance talents from Milan Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, East China University of Technology, and others. As the core operating unit of the Radiation Refrigeration Technology (Yangtze River Delta) Engineering Application Service Center, the enterprise is promoting the deep application of "zero energy passive refrigeration" and "climate adaptive materials" in cities and industries.
Faced with the dual challenges of frequent extreme high temperatures and surging energy consumption, SmartCool deeply integrates artificial intelligence and big data analysis. Through intelligent material adaptation and thermal environment simulation optimization, it achieves a full process intelligent upgrade from industry university research implementation. At present, radiation cooling technology has been widely applied in building enclosures, chemical storage tanks, power communication, photovoltaic modules, grain storage cold chains and other scenarios, demonstrating efficient, stable and sustainable cooling performance, significantly reducing carbon footprint and operational energy consumption. At present, the radiation cooling new material series products of brands such as "SmartCool" and "QLONIX" under SmartCool have been widely applied in the industrial and commercial energy-saving fields in the Yangtze River Delta region.
2、 Focusing on the pain points of automotive thermal management, radiation cooling technology demonstrates its potential for application
During the exchange, Mr. Cheng, the head of SmartCool, emphasized the application prospects of radiation cooling technology in the field of automotive glass and film products. Automotive glass and the Earth's atmosphere share similarities in thermodynamic principles: both are highly transparent to short wave visible light, but block long wave thermal radiation (infrared). Sunlight penetrates through the car windows and enters the cabin, heating up materials such as the interior, seats, and dashboard; The heated object immediately releases heat in the form of thermal radiation, but due to the obstruction of the car window, the heat cannot escape, forming a greenhouse effect that rapidly increases the temperature inside the car.
In extreme cases, it is quite common for the air temperature inside the car to be 20 to 30 ℃ higher than the external environment; In tropical regions such as the Middle East and South Asia, the highest measured temperature inside the car can exceed 67 ℃. High temperature not only poses a direct threat to the safety of occupants in the car, but also accelerates the aging of interior materials, releases volatile organic compounds such as benzene, and damages the air quality inside the car. For the driving experience, the high temperature after exposure to sunlight forces the driver to turn the air conditioning to the strongest gear and run it for a long time, which is difficult to endure and consumes a lot of energy. For the already popular electric vehicles, this issue is particularly prominent, and the range may even be reduced by nearly 20% as a result.
Radiation refrigeration technology has become a direction of great concern in academia and industry in recent years. The principle is that there is an "atmospheric transmission window" in the mid infrared range of wavelengths around 8 to 13 microns in the Earth's atmosphere, and thermal radiation within this wavelength range can directly penetrate the atmosphere and escape into outer space. Objects with a surface temperature of about room temperature on Earth have strong thermal radiation in this band, which can "dump" heat into space and achieve passive cooling without the need for electricity. The car window is the main channel for vehicle heat input and also a potential channel for discharging accumulated heat inside the car. It is a highly challenging task in optical material design to achieve both reflection of near-infrared radiation from the sun and emission of mid infrared radiation from the interior of the vehicle while maintaining high transparency.
3、 Open cooperation and win-win, jointly promoting green upgrading of the automotive industry
Chery Global Technology Innovation Center highly values SmartCool's exploration in radiation cooling technology and film products. Both parties agree that the application of radiation cooling technology in areas such as automotive glass, body film, and interior materials is expected to provide a new passive cooling solution for automotive thermal management, which is of great significance for improving the endurance of electric vehicles, enhancing driving comfort, and reducing air conditioning energy consumption.
Both parties stated that they will take this exchange as an opportunity to uphold the concept of "openness, cooperation, innovation, and win-win", further explore cooperation space in the development of radiation cooling film products, vehicle thermal management simulation, extreme environment testing and verification, and jointly promote the landing and application of green and low-carbon technologies in the automotive industry, contributing to the global response to climate change and sustainable development.
